Web 2.0 and the Music Industry

In this section, the development of Web 2.0 and it’s involvement in the music industry is explored. From how it began to the present state and what could occur in the future.

Below are chapters identifying the stages which have been gone through and details on each, as time passes.

Chapter 1 : P2P, the beginning

Chapter 2: The involvement of new technology

Chapter 3: The impact on the music industry

Chapter 4: What happened next… the compromise

Chapter 5 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly… a conclusion.

Now just an area to discuss the topic I am covering, why I chose it and the other relevent details surrounding it.

Why choose Web 2.0 and the Music Industry?

For the simple reason that it is a subject I can relate to. Most internet users in their late teens/early twenties will have grown up when Web 2.0 was being conceived, we may have not known it by this term, but we knew the internet and that it was changing. I also grew up with the sudden appearance of downloadable music… the uncertain legalities and the ‘viruses’ were little to deter many a young teen in their quest for free music.

But overall I think everyone (that uses the internet/MP3 players/Ipods etc) has an opinion on it. And the fact that in the space of only a few years, the market has been blown wide open and what seems to be consistently in the public eye, means that there is still a lot of things to come from both the music industry and Web 2.0.

What position have I taken when approaching the subject

Clearly, I will have my own pre-conceived views on the topic, but have approached it in an objective manner, as many of the chapters are fact based and need not be opinionated anyway. However in the conclusion I have weighed up the idea of Web 2.0 and the music industry and drawn my own conclusions.
